Choose the business structure, register the name or company, arrange payments and tax administration, then build the online sales process around the real customer journey.
Decide what is being sold and where customers are located
Separate physical products, digital products and services because they create different delivery, refund, inventory and customer-support requirements. Also decide whether the business will sell only in Trinidad and Tobago or accept overseas orders.
The business activity description used in registration should reflect what the business actually does instead of a vague phrase such as “online services.”
Register the business through the correct CROS route
An individual trading under a business name normally uses the individual business-name registration route. Partnerships use the firm route, and a profit company follows the company incorporation process.
CROS is the Registry system for name reservation, business-name registration and incorporation. A CRA is needed before the filing can be made.
Plan the payment method before building checkout
Confirm which payment provider can settle the currencies you need and whether the business account must be active before the merchant application. A website that can display a shopping cart is not automatically able to receive the desired payment method.
Document transaction fees, settlement timing, refunds and chargeback handling so the price includes the real cost of taking payment.
Build customer records and terms into the process
Keep order, invoice and payment records that can be reconciled with bank and tax records. Publish clear contact information and customer terms that fit the product, delivery method and refund policy.
If personal information is collected through forms or checkout, restrict access to the people and systems that need it.
Watch the tax and employer triggers as the business grows
BIR, PAYE, NIS and VAT are separate from Companies Registry registration. The need for each depends on structure, employees, revenue and the current rules.
Review the requirements when the business hires its first employee, changes structure or approaches the current VAT threshold.
Questions people ask
Can I run an online business without a website?
Yes. The sales channel can be a marketplace or social platform, but the business still needs the registrations and records that apply to its structure and activity.
Does CROS create my online store?
No. CROS handles Companies Registry services; the online store or sales platform is a separate business system.
Do online businesses need VAT registration?
VAT registration depends on the current statutory requirements and turnover, not simply on whether sales happen online.
