What the official process requires

A registration path built around the Companies Registry Online System.

The Registrar General’s Companies Registry uses CROS for business-name registrations and company incorporations. The exact steps differ by structure.

1

Create the required Registry account

A Companies Registry Account is required to use CROS. For companies, every person involved in the formation process must have the required account.

2

Choose and reserve the name

The proposed name must meet availability and suitability requirements. Approved reservations are currently valid for 45 days.

3

Complete the online filing

The filing is submitted through CROS with the applicable information, approvals and statutory filing fee.

4

Complete the certificate step

The Registry’s current instructions require signed documents to be delivered to the Companies Registry counter to complete certificate collection.

Structure decision

Not sure whether you need a sole trader registration or a company?

That question deserves a practical answer. The right structure depends on ownership, risk, administration, growth plans and how you expect the business to operate.

Choose sole trader when simplicity is the priority.

A sole trader route can suit one-person businesses that want to begin operating under a registered business name with a lighter administrative structure.

Consider a company when separation and scale matter.

A limited liability company is a separate legal entity and carries continuing statutory filing obligations, including annual returns and beneficial ownership requirements.
