Choose an owner and trading name, complete the appropriate CROS registration, check property and environmental rules for where washing occurs, then build a per-vehicle service menu and accurate records. There is no universal permission to wash on any road or commercial lot simply because a business is registered.
Choose the service you can reliably deliver
A basic exterior wash, interior vacuum, upholstery extraction, engine-bay cleaning, paint correction and ceramic-coating work require different supplies, time and care. Define packages in terms a customer can see: vehicle size, selected surfaces, stains, protective products and whether deep cleaning is included.
Test how long each package takes on typical vehicles. Calculate the number of bookings you can finish without rushing or damaging property. An appointment-based model reduces idle driving, while walk-up locations may involve different permissions and operating costs.
Register the trading identity through CROS
The Companies Registry's individual business-name process applies to an appropriate sole-trader structure. The required CRA enables access to CROS, where the proposed name is reserved and the registration filing is completed. The Registry publishes TT$20 for individual name reservation and TT$220 for business-name registration. Those are government filing fees.
A business with several owners or substantial contractual exposure should consider whether incorporation is appropriate. Keep company or business documents, BIR details and invoices consistent. Confirm name approval before permanently branding a van, tent or trailer.
Get permission for each place you operate
If customers bring vehicles to your yard, verify the property's allowed use and ask the responsible local authority about relevant planning, nuisance and environmental controls. If you wash at offices, malls, apartment compounds or residential driveways, obtain the owner's permission and confirm access conditions before accepting the job.
Plan where water comes from and where wastewater, soil, oils and chemicals go. Do not assume that wash water can be discharged into a roadside drain. The Ministry of Health's Public Health Inspectorate describes functions involving wastewater, drainage and nuisances; seek location-specific requirements from the responsible agencies.
Build water and equipment costs into each price
Estimate travel time, fuel, water, electricity, detergent, towels, pads, replacement equipment and time spent setting up. A customer 30 minutes away may consume an hour of round-trip travel before a single vehicle is cleaned. Group bookings by area and set a transparent travel surcharge when appropriate.
Separate entry-level maintenance washes from restoration or specialist paint work. List what is excluded and what requires customer approval, such as heavy pet hair, mould, water damage or engine cleaning. Inspect the vehicle with the customer and record existing damage before work begins.
Use bookings and deposits professionally
Take the location, vehicle type, service, date and contact details when accepting a reservation. Explain cancellation rules, rain or weather postponement, water/electricity access and whether the customer must be present. If the site has restricted parking or security access, ask before arrival.
Send a written quotation and receipt showing the service performed. Keep photos private unless the customer authorises marketing use. Never describe a chemical or coating as guaranteed to prevent scratches or eliminate all bacteria unless the claim can be substantiated.
Prepare for employee and tax obligations
When adding assistants, check NIBTT's registration rules and Inland Revenue payroll requirements. NIBTT says employers must register within 14 days of hiring their first employee. Record shifts, pay, supplies and which employee handled each vehicle to manage quality and disputes.
Maintain proper sales and expense records. The Inland Revenue Division describes BIR registration and annual tax obligations for self-employed businesses. Its current VAT guidance gives a TT$600,000 commercial-supplies threshold for relevant twelve-month periods; assess whether registration is required before issuing VAT invoices.
Launch with a measurable weekly plan
Register and document the business, obtain operating-location permission, test products safely, set service times and prices, then book a limited number of nearby vehicles. Track repeat customers, average revenue per vehicle, cost per job and time spent travelling. Scale only after the actual figures show a viable margin.
For registration and business administration, BizReg offers sole-trader registration, company registration, cash-flow projections and service enquiries. CRA application assistance is included when required with another purchased BizReg service; only CRA-only requests have the separate TT$350 per-person assistance charge.
Questions customers ask
Can I wash vehicles at any car park if my business is registered?
No. Business-name registration does not grant landowner permission or waive local location, drainage or environmental requirements. Check with the owner and relevant authority first.
How should a mobile detailer price work?
Include actual cleaning time, travel, setup, water, products, equipment wear and the extra complexity of larger or heavily soiled vehicles.
Do mobile detailers need BIR records?
The Inland Revenue Division identifies tax registration, books and records and returns as self-employed obligations. The appropriate registrations depend on your circumstances.
